A compassionate learning community
A unique learning experience in a natural setting
Tsukuba International School isn’t just a school, it’s a grounded, community-rooted educational sanctuary. TIS is a fiercely independent, non-profit IB World School defined by deep stability and unwavering authenticity. Nestled on a tranquil, forested campus in Tsukuba, our learning environment is anchored by a mature leadership team and an exceptionally experienced faculty with outstanding staff retention, meaning our students grow alongside mentor educators who truly know them year after year. We invest every resource directly back into our students, our warm culture, and our environment, offering a genuine, human-centered global education where children thrive as original thinkers.
We foster an inclusive community across fifteen grades, from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, maintaining a single, close-knit class per grade to ensure tailored individual support. Our ~300 students represent a rich tapestry of international backgrounds, guided daily by dedicated, highly qualified educators recruited globally. This small-by-design environment allows us to deliver the full International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum with rare intimacy and focus.
Our measure of success isn’t forcing students into a one-size-fits-all mold, but helping each individual discover what they love and equipping them to pursue it. TIS graduates define their own futures, whether that means entering specialized creative programs, pursuing research at leading global universities, or launching meaningful endeavors directly. Supported by our full continuum IB authorization and CIS accreditation, our alumni are empowered to gain admission to the exact higher education institutions and pathways around the world that align with their personal passions and life goals.
International Baccalaureate at Tsukuba IS
International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools share a commitment to a rigorous, high-quality, international education. As the only full-continuum IB World School in Ibaraki Prefecture—and the sixth in all of Japan—Tsukuba International School offers a seamless educational journey through the Primary Years Programme (PYP, authorized 2011), Middle Years Programme (MYP, authorized 2014), and Diploma Programme (DP, authorized 2017).
The IB framework goes beyond standard academic memorization, focusing on the whole child by fostering critical thinking, intercultural empathy, and global responsibility. In our intimate, nature-immersed environment, IB inquiry comes alive: students don’t just study concepts in textbooks—they explore the world around them, question assumptions, and develop into independent, open-minded problem solvers equipped for any path they choose.
